چکیده

COMBINING INTENT MODELING and visual user interfaces can help users discover novel information and dramatically improve their information-exploration performance. Current-generation search engines serve billions of requests each day, returning responses to search queries in fractions of a second. They are great tools for checking facts and looking up information for which users can easily create queries (such as “Find the closest restaurants” or “Find reviews of a book”). What search engines are not good at is supporting complex informationexploration and discovery tasks that go beyond simple keyword queries. In information exploration and discovery, often called “exploratory search,” users may have difficulty expressing their information needs, and new search intents may emerge and be discovered only as they learn by reflecting on the acquired information. This finding roots back to the “vocabulary mismatch problem” that was identified in the 1980s but has remained difficult to tackle in operational information retrieval (IR) systems (see the sidebar “Background”). In essence, the problem refers to human communication behavior in which the humans writing the documents to be retrieved and the humans searching for them are likely to use very different vocabularies to encode and decode their intended meaning. Assisting users in the search process is increasingly important, as everyday search behavior ranges from simple look-ups to a spectrum of search tasks in which search behavior is more exploratory and information needs and search intents uncertain and evolving over time. We introduce interactive intent modeling, an approach promoting resourceful interaction between huInteractive Intent Modeling: Information Discovery Beyond Search

Human Intent Representation in Knowledge Intensive Product Model

Success in engineering activities mostly depends on success in transfer of human intent into product. Recently, product development applies product model as medium to describe product information in product data base. While modeling gives a great chance for the description of engineer’s intent, current information based product models are not capable of this description. Human intent remains in...

Behavior and Design Intent Based Product Modeling

A knowledge based modeling of mechanical products is presented for industrial CAD/CAM systems. An active model is proposed that comprise knowledge from modeling procedures, generic part models and engineers. Present day models of mechanical systems do not contain data about the background of human decisions. This situation motivated the authors at their investigations on exchange design intent ...

Personalization of Search Results using Interactive Intent Modeling

In interactive intent modeling the user participates in constructing a model of her search intent using an interactive user interface. This allows the user to iteratively refine the model used for personalizing her search results, even in the presence of high initial uncertainty of the search intent. This approach for personalization has been shown to be beneficial in exploratory information re...

New Design Objective and Human Intent-based Management of Changes for Product Modeling

This paper is concerned with the evaluation of effects of modeled object changes at development of product in virtual space. Modeling of engineering objects such as elements and structures of products, results of analyses and tests, processes for production, and customer services has reached the level where sophisticated descriptions and modeling procedures serve lifecycle management of product...

Modeling Users for Adaptive Information Retrieval by Capturing User Intent

In this chapter, we study and present our results on the problem of employing a cognitive user model for Information Retrieval (IR) in which a user’s intent is captured and used for improving his/her effectiveness in an information seeking task. The user intent is captured by analyzing the commonality of the retrieved relevant documents. The effectiveness of our user model is evaluated with reg...
